Mental Health and Physical Movement – The Benefits of Movement

Why is movement so important? Everything in our universe is in motion. Our bodies need motion to keep our joints healthy and strengthen our bones. Circulation and cardiovascular health depend on movement. Good coordination, reflex reactivity, improved learning skills, concentration and overall mental-well being are all related to how we move everyday.

It’s often been said that your emotion is determined by your motion. If you’ve ever been feeling down or in a slump and got up and went on a run or went to the gym, you probably felt better emotionally afterwards. But if you continued sitting around, staring at the tv all day, sleeping in, or sitting on your computer working, you likely had more negative emotions.

The Benefits of Movement

Oftentimes, when we think of movement, we automatically associate it with a sweat-inducing workout at the gym. However, movement can take a number of forms, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. In fact, all types of movement are beneficial for our bodies and minds. Here are just a few of the benefits of moving your body:

Movement is a tangible and accessible coping mechanism for all abilities, fitness levels and ranges of mobility. It can also be a great outlet to meet people, build community and find support in tough times. Technology has its pros and cons, so if you have a job or a career that requires you to sit at a desk all day, you might want to consider some different office wellness solutions such as treadmill desks or bike desks. These tools allow you to turn your workspace into a more physically active environment.

Participating in regular movement (i.e. physical activity or exercise) has proven benefits for both our minds and bodies.
